On August 8, 2026, the adaptive sports community gathered at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, California, for the unveiling of Wheelchair Basketball Square, recognizing the historic site where the first wheelchair basketball game was played.

Athletes, coaches, and community members came together to celebrate the history of the sport, with para-athletes also taking the court for exhibition play.

As Los Angeles prepares to host the Paralympic Games in 2028, the celebration was a fitting opportunity to honor the history of wheelchair basketball and recognize how far the sport has come.
